5 Best Spots to See the Cherry Blossoms in Washington, DC
Washington DC’s mild winter is ushering in an early bloom of the iconic Cherry Blossom Trees on the National Tidal Basin. As cherry tree blossoms begin to signal a new season in DC, we’re eager to share some of our favorite spots to photograph these pink trees.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial
Situated on a four-acre site along the Tidal Basin, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial has 182 pink and white cherry trees surrounding the prominent 30-foot statue of the Civil Rights icon. The cherry blossoms were planted to reflect Dr. King’s lifelong message of faith, hope, and endurance, so the scene is not only beautiful but meaningful.
Tidal Basin
You can likely see cherry blossoms anywhere on the banks of the Tidal Basin. We recommend renting a paddle boat to do a full loop around the Tidal Basin and photograph the pink blossoms from every angle.
The Gardens of Dumbarton Oaks
Lined with three types of cherry trees, the Cherry Hill at the Gardens of Dumbarton Oaks is situated on a slope at the bottom of this historic garden. Tucked away in a corner, the isolated, picturesque garden stands out distinctly from this large estate in Georgetown.
Hains Point in East Potomac Park
For those who drive, you can take a scenic drive through East Potomac Park. Alternatively, you could also cycle or take a stroll on the Hains Point Loop Trail. The 4.1-mile trail lets you see different species of cherry trees as well as splendid river views.
The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
As the largest Catholic church in the country, The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is surrounded by lush gardens, featuring over 150 gorgeous cherry blossom trees. The pink flowers against the church’s incredible architecture make lovely close-up shots as well as a backdrop for portraits.
You can also do more than just admire the cherry blossoms. When you book our ‘Adopt a Tree’ overnight package, our hotel will donate 10% of each package to the Trust with the National Mall and support the ‘Adopt a Cherry Tree’ campaign. The proceeds will be dedicated to caring for the 3,700 cherry trees in Washington D.C. Plus, the offer includes a picnic basket for two, curated by Chef Nicolas Steffaneli, and a pair of one-day metro passes to easily check out the cherry blossoms.
